I suppose an ENSO “Neutral” pattern is better than our present La Niña, but when I read this from the NWS, I’m not exactly feeling better about our new pattern, that is neither La Niña or El Niño. “ENSO-neutral” means that neither El Niño nor La Niña are in effect, and global seasonal conditions are less predictable”. The best news after reading the latest report from the CPC is that long-range forecasts are leaning towards us easing into an El Niño pattern by this fall. While you can never count on any pattern to live up to its reputation, El Niño typically gives the entire SW more moisture during the fall and winter seasons.

In the short term, yet another warm January day with temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s. Another warm one tomorrow before our “2fer” fronts move through…the wimpy one around noon and the stronger one around midnight. There is a tiny chance that a line of storms could develop along each front, but the odds are very low. Winds will gust out of the NW up to 35mph tomorrow night and Saturday, so be warned! It will feel chilly on Saturday with the winds combined with temperatures that will struggle to get out of the 50’s. Lows on Sunday and Monday will be in the 30’s and 40’s, with freezes a possibility each morning in south-central Texas and the northern counties of south Texas.

We stay seasonably cool next week with another tiny chance for rain on Monday and Tuesday. Still no decent rain event on the horizon, but as I have been mentioning this week, our high pressure looks to break down by the third week of the month, increasing our chances for rain.
