We saw some great bonus rain yesterday afternoon in the Hill Country and NW Bexar County, where one spot in Helotes recorded over 2 inches of rain. My station, which is slightly south of Helotes, recorded only 0.23 inches of rain.
A trough is slipping southward today from north Texas, currently kicking up some storms along I20 to as far south as San Angelo. This line of storms will likely hold together (even though it may weaken) and send some rain into south-central Texas by later this afternoon and evening. By tomorrow, a front enters the picture and the front-trough combo sets up decent rain odds for south-central and south Texas for Thursday and Friday. While we continue with a chance for rain through the weekend, the best odds for higher totals will be Thursday and Friday. The high pressure remains over the west for at least another week, giving us continued rain chances throughout the period.
The tropics remain active, but nothing is currently forecast to impact the Gulf in the next week. 99L has a 40% chance of becoming a tropical depression over the next week, but will likely go “poof” soon after. The GFS continues its great job of scaring people with its long-range forecast, sending a hurricane into the Gulf during the first week of September. Not saying it won’t happen, but as usual, it’s the only model forecasting anything in the Gulf.
