Before we dive into the tropics and drought…there is a slight chance for some wildly scattered storms for south-central Texas this afternoon and during the night. As is typical for this time of the year, some of these could grow to severe levels. Best odds will be in the Hill Country and eastward to Austin. For everyone else, just hot and humid! There remains a good chance for rain starting late Sunday through most of next week…we will look more into that tomorrow.

The NHC released its outlook for this summer and as expected by me, it calls for a good chance for an active tropical season. Here’s their summary: “The season is expected to be above normal – due to a confluence of factors, including continued ENSO-neutral conditions, warmer than average ocean temperatures, forecasts for weak wind shear, and the potential for higher activity from the West African Monsoon, a primary starting point for Atlantic hurricanes. All of these elements tend to favor tropical storm formation.” I have some graphics from their press release and from our local NWS below. Here is a link to their entire forecast: NOAA predicts above-normal 2025 Atlantic hurricane season | National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

As for our drought, conditions continue to worsen, so the potential for an active tropical season gives us some hope for this summer. Below are graphics for rainfall totals, drought comparison with a year ago and today’s drought map. I have also included a graphic from 4Zone Weather for San Antonio, comparing this drought with the horrible one in the 50’s.
