While anything can still happen when you put a low pressure into the warm Gulf, as of post time, the models are not impressed with Depression #2 in regards to it’s potential rain impact for our area. The storm will likely get beat up along the Mississippi and Louisiana coasts, then experience some major wind sheer along with drier air as it moves into Texas later in the week. Officially we need to continue to monitor this system and keep tabs with the NHC updates, but as I mentioned above, none of the models are forecasting much if any rain for our area from this storm as of post time.
From the NHS: “At 100 PM CDT (1800 UTC), the center of Tropical Depression Two was located near latitude 28.6 North, longitude 85.6 West. The depression is moving erratically toward the northwest near 3 mph (6 km/h). A slow northwestward motion is expected through tonight, followed by a turn toward the west-northwest or west. On the forecast track, the depression will move near or along the northern Gulf coast during the next several days. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph (55 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is expected for the next day or two, and the depression is expected to become a tropical storm later today or tonight.
Other than this storm in the Gulf, there is no other potential rain event on the horizon…just our typical late July “hot and humid” forecast.

Current water vapor imagery shows a lot of dry air in the mid-levels of the atmosphere. This dry air will not help Depression Two as it moves towards Texas.
