As a mid-level shortwave moves across Texas from the Gulf it will interact with a stationary front to our north, igniting scattered afternoon storms today and tomorrow. At post time, storms are already starting to pop up on radar in some of our northern counties that are closer to the frontal boundary in central Texas. Storms are moving very little, so if one forms on top of your backyard, you can expect some potentially brief heavy rain. Looking over the latest models for rainfall through tomorrow, most of the activity is forecast to stay north of HWY 90 and east of I-37.
August is generally a medium rainfall month with most locations averaging 1-2 inches of rain except closer to the coast where totals are closer to 3 inches. The two big players for August are the tropics and early season cool fronts. As of post time, I don’t see another front impacting us after this weekend for at least a week and the latest NHC update continues to forecast no tropical activity for the next week as well. On a positive note, the latest CPC outlook gives us better than 50-50 odds for above normal precipitation in the 6-10 and 8-14 day period.
