Thanks to the remnants of our low pressure (98L), that moved through our area early this morning, we saw some decent rain totals for some lucky rain lottery winners. As I mentioned yesterday, storms would be scattered, but had the potential to drop 1-2 inches of rain. My weather station in NW Bexar County picked up 0.63 inches of rain this morning and there were quite of few of you in western Bexar, Medina and Bandera counties that measured over 1.5 inches of rain. While there could still be a few small cells forming this afternoon, for the most part, this system is over and we will return to hot and humid days through Monday.
By Tuesday, rain chances return as high pressure moves west, opening the door for an inverted trough to slowly move into our area from the Gulf, giving us decent odds for more pm poppers through at least Friday! While not a drought buster, it’s great to see high pressure breaking down and giving us some rain relief as we move towards the back side of August. CPC outlooks for 6-10 and 8-14 days continue to give us better than 50/50 odds for wetter than normal precipitation.
As far as the tropics go, Erin is now a rare CAT 5 hurricane, with sustained winds of 160mph! Fortunately, it will not have direct impact on the USA mainland, but could bring mudslides and heavy rain to the Leeward Islands, Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico over the next couple of days. For now, that’s the extent of storms in the Atlantic. The GFS model has been scaring people over the past day, forecasting a major hurricane in the Gulf in about 10 days. As most of us know by now, the GFS has a really bad hurricane forecast record and is currently the only model forecasting a storm during that time frame. While it could happen, please don’t fall for any weather pages hyping this model run.
