For the next 24hrs, this page will now be know as “Mark Langford’s Aurora Borealis Page”!
With little weather to discuss, let’s talk about how exciting last night’s Northern Lights were and how there is a decent chance for repeat performance tonight. While I had seen that there was a chance for seeing the Aurora last night, as of post time, it looked like only the northern states were going to be in on the fun, so I did not mention there was a chance to see them. That all changed quickly, and by 6pm, people were starting to report northern lights from the southern states and my aurora app was dinging me every few minutes with updates! Based on the latest forecast, conditions may be as good as last night, so if you can slip away from city lights and find an unobstructed view of the northern horizon, I would give it a try. Of course, just like the weather, there are no guarantees of a repeat performance, but the odds are good!
As far as photo gear goes, while I did take some photos with my DSLR on a tripod, my iPhone 16pro rocked and those images actually had better color saturation than my DSLR ones. You do need the latest Android or iPhone that will allow you to take exposures of at least 1-2 seconds. As a warning, you may not be able to see the aurora very well with just your eyes, especially as far south as central and southern Texas…you will likely just see a faint glow to the north. If so, break out your camera and you will be incredibly surprised at what you see! Conditions got so good in SW Colorado, that I could actually see pink and green hues in the sky without taking a photo. Below are the latest details for tonight…unlike SW Colorado, south Texas should be almost cloud free through midnight, so if it pans out, you won’t have to worry about it being obscured by clouds.
Weather wise, not much to talk about in the short term. A wimpy front will try to move through our area on Sunday, but may go poof before doing so. As of today, any rain will be confined to mainly NE Texas. Our best odds for rain will come later next week with another front and disturbance. CPC outlooks continue to give us better than 50/50 odds for above normal precipitation for the next 6-14 days.
Please feel free to post your Aurora Borealis photos…just let us know where your were.

This awesome photo was taken in Helotes by Sarah Rhodes last night.
Despite the diagram, this forecast is very similar to what we saw last night with high Kp and G Scale numbers.
