From an article in the New Orleans Advocate newspaper…”Currently, the Gulf's ocean heat content, a measure of surface temperatures combined with the temperatures of deeper waters, is at an all-time high, according to Brian McNoldy, a climate researcher at the University of Miami.”

So, what does that mean, other than you can currently use the Gulf as a hot tub? Obviously, if a storm were to develop in the Gulf, we’d likely see a major hurricane that would bring a lot of destruction to the coast and many miles inland. But what if no tropical systems develop over the next month, then what? My own opinion is that we could see several scenarios play out. First, the Gulf will keep our fall temperatures warmer, with a gigantic heater ushering in warm air into our area for many months. Secondly, if we do ever get a decent cold front with a disturbance, the likelihood for some very heavy rain would seem plausible. The latest Euro model run, which you can see below, could give us an idea of what I’m talking about…unfortunately, the heavy rain is currently forecast for north Texas and Oklahoma, not us. But all it would take is one front to go stationary over us, then a few disturbances from Mexico, to potentially give us some major flooding here.

Meanwhile, other than some sea breeze storms along the coast and far south Texas, most of us will remain hot, humid and rainless for the next 7-10 days. There are currently no fronts in line to impact us, nor any tropical systems heading our way.

Hang in there!
