The CPC outlooks have finally arrived (3 days late) and that will be our topic of the day. The first thing that stands out is the monthly rainfall forecast for September…equal odds for above or below normal rainfall. While that may not sound great, given that September is one of our wetter months of the year, even those odds are better than what we have seen most of the summer. Looking into the seasonal forecasts, we see a shift to better than 50-50 odds for above normal precipitation for October, November and December, which is when the positive impacts of El Niño normally start kicking in for south Texas. All of the seasonal forecasts from that point onward favor above normal rainfall through the spring. For temperatures, the CPC is flipping a coin for above or below average temperatures during that time period.
If we can just get through early to mid September, I feel that as soon as we start seeing the subtropical jet stream bringing in moisture from the Pacific, we should see storm systems moving in from Mexico ahead of and along Pacific cool fronts. Coupled with any late season eastern Pacific hurricanes or tropical storms off the coast of Mexico, there will the chance for heavy rainfall events like we have seen in the past in late September and early October. Another thing to consider is if we don’t see any storms form in the Gulf over the next month, the Gulf will remain warm and will also contribute to possible heavy rain events as we move into fall.
Meanwhile, more of the same….no rain and hot temperatures continue.
